Where to Stay in Ayia Napa and Protaras: Areas Compared

Ayia Napa and Protaras sit on the south-east tip of Cyprus, around 40 minutes by road from Larnaca Airport. They share the same pale sandy beaches and clear water, but they suit very different holidays. Ayia Napa is known for nightlife, while Protaras is calmer and more family-oriented.

Ayia Napa center

The streets around the main square and the medieval monastery are the center of Ayia Napa’s nightlife. If you’re traveling to go out, staying within walking distance saves taxi fares. If you want sleep, look a few streets away or choose a hotel with good soundproofing, and read recent reviews that mention noise.

Nissi Beach

West of the center, Nissi Beach has fine sand and shallow turquoise water, plus a small island you can wade toward at low water. Hotels here put you on the beach, a short ride from the center. It gets very busy in July and August.

The east side and Cape Greco

Toward Cape Greco National Forest Park, the atmosphere is quieter. It’s a good base for coastal walks, sea caves and sunrise views. A car or scooter makes life easier here.

Protaras

Protaras, north of Cape Greco, is a resort area with a string of sandy bays, the best known being Fig Tree Bay. It suits families and travelers who want a relaxed evening meal rather than a night out. Hotels and apartments are spread along a long coastal road, so check the distance to the beach before booking.

Season and timing

The east coast is very seasonal. Many bars, beach clubs and some hotels close or scale down in the winter months. For beach holidays, late May to October is the main season. In mid-summer, temperatures are high, so a hotel with shade and a pool is worth having.
