Where to Stay in Athens: Best Neighborhoods for a First Visit

Athens is big, but most first-time visitors spend their time within walking distance of the Acropolis. Stay in one of the central neighborhoods below and you can walk to the main sights, and reach the airport and the port of Piraeus by metro.

Plaka

Plaka’s lanes wind around the northern and eastern slopes of the Acropolis. It’s the classic first-visit base, quiet once day-trippers leave and close to everything. The trade-off is that restaurants on the main streets are aimed at tourists.

Monastiraki and Psyrri

Monastiraki Square sits at the junction of metro lines 1 and 3, so the airport and Piraeus are both a direct ride away. Psyrri, next door, is full of tavernas, bars and street art. It’s great if you want energy in the evenings, less ideal for light sleepers.

Syntagma

Syntagma Square, facing the Greek Parliament, is the city’s transport hub. Metro line 3 runs directly to the airport, which makes Syntagma practical for one or two nights before an early flight or a ferry.

Koukaki and Makrygianni

South of the Acropolis, around the Acropolis Museum, these residential neighborhoods offer apartments and boutique hotels, neighborhood cafés and a more local rhythm. The Akropoli metro station on line 2 is close by.

Thissio

Thissio sits along the pedestrianized Apostolou Pavlou walkway west of the Acropolis, with open-air cafés and some of the best sunset views in the center.

Kolonaki

On the slopes of Lycabettus Hill, Kolonaki is the city’s upscale district, with designer shops, galleries and smart cafés. It’s walkable to Syntagma but uphill.

Practical tips

  • Summer heat: from June to August, air conditioning and a short walk to the sights matter more than a view.
  • Ferry next day? Choose a hotel close to metro line 1 (Monastiraki, Thissio) for a direct ride to Piraeus.
  • Accommodation tax: Greece charges a per-night climate resilience fee, usually paid at the property. Check what your booking includes.

Book the Acropolis ahead

Entry to the Acropolis is by timed slot, and summer mornings sell out. Buy official tickets on the Hellenic Heritage e-ticket site (hhticket.gr), or browse Acropolis tickets and Athens tours on Tiqets (affiliate link) if you want a guided visit or combined tickets.
